La Strada returns to New York running Off-Broadway!

LA STRADA
Off-Broadway run at Barrow Street  TBG Theater
OCTOBER 22nd- DECEMBER 4TH

The play opens as three desperate clowns scramble to create an act to save their jobs. La Strada then unfolds into the story of a frail and innocent young woman, Gelsomina, sold to a brutish man, Zampanó, who works as a traveling showman. She joins him on the road as a part of his act, enduring physical and emotional pain along the way. Trouble erupts when the pair joins a traveling circus, where they meet a clown who secretly falls in love with the woman. What will happen when Zampanó realizes the clown's intentions towards Gelsomina? Will she stay with him, even if that means further enduring his maltreatments?

Written and Performed by : PEG-ASS-USThis  real-life couple, have crafted perhaps the silliest, most heartfelt romantic comedy about strap-on anal sex ever. Their beginner's guide to “pegging”  complete with sing-a-longs, how-to’s, puppets burlesque and audience interaction - offers a hilariously penetrating look at queer sex for straight folks. But as the lesson probes deeper, it devolves into a lover's quarrel that tickles qualms, exposes scruples, liberates desire and comes to a climax where everyone gets off!   Most shows also feature an audience talk-back!

John first described the idea for this show to me after a rehearsal for his show Numbers UP! we were working on together. I had never heard the term "Pegging" before. He described his struggle to share his private sexuality with a partner.  It is a story of rejection, gender exploration, mis-conceptions from potential partners, lovers and friends and ultimately the challenges of the reality after finding a loving partner.   He explained they thought the show could be educational, sweet, dark and really really funny! The more the three of us talked it became clear this show could be all those things and more.  It could open up discussion among couples, encourage people embrace their personal sexuality, create healing, and remind us all that we are here to love and play with each other and that we do it best when we communicate. Sophie and John are both hilarious, brave, mulit-talented performers who have revealed their personal sexual truth, making us giggle at the long standing American taboo of discussing S-E-X!

FEDERICO FELLINI, TULLIO PINELLI and ENNIO FLAIANO

Spanish adaptation by

Directed by  RENE BUCH

Co-directed by JORGE MERCED

Clown Consultation by AUDREY CRABTREE

La Strada tells the story of a frail and innocent young woman, Gelsomina (played in Fellini's classic by Giuletta Massina,) sold to a brutish man, Zampanó (played by Anthony Quinn in the film,) who works as a traveling showman.  She joins him on the road as a part of his act, enduring physical and emotional pain along the way.  Trouble erupts when the pair joins a traveling circus, where they meet a clown who secretly falls in love with the young woman.  What will happen when Zampanó realizes the clown's intentions towards Gelsomina? Will she stay with him, even if that means further enduring his maltreatments?

Oscar-winner for Best Foreign Film in 1956, La Strada is a timeless masterpiece that will be brought, for the first time, to the New York theatre scene. This production is the result of a collaborative work between IATI, one of the most prestigious Hispanic theaters in New York, and a Spanish artistic company also named La Strada, whose goal is to build a cultural bridge between Spain and the US.
