Audrey Crabtree is an instructor and award-winning creator, performer, director and producer of original theatrical work. Audrey is known for creating dynamic physical work that inter-acts directly with the audience, and is subversively comic. She works in the mediums of theatre, film and TV, circus and performance art.
As a collaborator and performer her work has won a Drama Desk Award, NY Innovative Theater Award, and Fringe Festival award, and the Golden Nose Award. As a director her collaborations have won Best Comedy in San Francisco Fringe Festival and the Spanish language HOLA and ATI awards. She is co-artistic director of Ten Directions creating original film and stage work, and was the director and co-founder of the international NY Clown Theatre Festival.
She combines her background and experience in acting, improvisation, physical theater, clown, bouffon and inter-active theater to transform and inspire.
Since 1996 Audrey has been teaching and coaching professional theater practitioners, business executives, students and communities all over the world, to enhance their performance on stage, in the workplace, and life.
Audrey coaches, performs, teaches and directs clowning, physical comedy and bouffon internationally. She has studied a wide range of styles including Native American clowning, theatrical clowning, physical comedy, humanitarian clowning, grotesque, bouffon, eccentric dance, slapstick and classic circus.
As a clown Audrey has worked with Big Apple Circus private events, ClownCare Unit and Vaudeville Caravan, and in festival, films, and live performance on the Variety Scene.
As a Bouffon, she is a co-creator and performer of the award-winning Bouffon Glass Menajoree. One of her bouffons, Graspy McTakeItAll, was originally commissioned for the International Globesity Festival and was featured in the plays Detritus and Robert Honeywell's Lord Oxford and at variety shows all over NYC. Audrey's 'Baby' bouffon has appeared at festivals, art events and theaters. Ms Deenie Nast is a grotesque character created in 2005, in her current inter-active show Only The Lonely she partners with an audience volunteer, together they develop a unique relationship, and a show that is touching and funny.
As Director and co-founder of the NY Clown Theatre Festival for the past 9 years she has brought more than 500 clowns, 200 clown theatre shows and over 26 master classes to NYC. And working with John Towsen they started the NY Physical Comedy Lab.
Audrey began improvising in 1992. She studied with, and was greatly influenced by Paul Sills, Del Close and Armando Diaz. She worked, taught and toured all over North America with short-form, long-form, musical, character based and full story improvisation working with ComedySportz, Disney California Adventure, Brave New Workshop, Stevie Ray's Improv Company Jump Up and Run, The Bad Mamma Jammas an others..
She has written and performed parody with NPR, Minnesota Public Radio, Brave New Workshop and was featured in several of Big Bladder's improvisation shorts including Comedy Central's satirical Lets Bowl! She continues to use improvisation as an inter-actor with Playing With Reality and as a creator, coach, direct of improvisation based theater.
Audrey Crabtree is an award winning director, performer, writer, and instructor. She works with actors, improvisers, clowns, bouffons, burlesque performers, and artists; teaching, coaching and directing since 1991.
She directed the award-winning projects including the multi-media ...and the fear cracked open., the Romantic Burlesque Peg-Ass-Us, clowning in the Spanish Language La Strada, as well as original works at HEREarts, Motherlodge Festival, The Brick Theater Fight Festival and numerous acts featured in cabarets, theaters and circuses internationally.
Audrey ran the 4-year weekly performance lab, Play Practice, ComedySportz High School League, and many kids programs are workshops that developed into showcases and performances. She has directed short, long, musical & ongoing character-based forms of improvisation. She is Co-Artistic Director of Ten Directions Productions, and board member of the Art house Collective: Unconscious.
Audrey enjoys teaching and directing kids and families in schools, camps, and social groups. Using theater, circus, physical comedy, arts and crafts, improvisation and play she helps kids have fun while developing self-confidence and building physical and emotion skills. Often workshops culminate in public performance connecting families and communities.
With a focus on bringing joy, connection, and playfulness to kids, adults and families in difficult situations Audrey has worked with Big Apple Circus' Clown Care Unit Vaudeville Caravan, Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, and Clowns without Borders USA.
Crabtree produces and curates original work ranging from large-scale outdoor spectacles to one-on-one interactive performances, collaborating with fine artists, musicians, choreographers, and performers of every kind. Her company, Ten Directions Productions along with Lynn Berg has created 15 full productions, 7 shorts, a feature film, and numerous cabarets and private events.
For 9 years she was director and curator of the international NY Clown Theatre Festival that offered a month of Master Classes, lectures, new and established performances and parades. She was also a Collective:Unconscious Board Member for 4 years curating and producing theater, video, music and art.
